Course Syllabus

Phono-Graphix 35 Hour Course Syllabus


Upon completion of this course and successful completion of the final examination, the participant is awarded the Phono-Graphix certification. Purchase of one of the Phono-Graphix certification kits is required.

Day One

Overview of Theory in Phonetic Instruction - 1 hour, 15 minutes

This section is intended to give the participant a structural blueprint of reading instruction based on the nature of the code and the cognitive skills needed to read and spell the code; while taking into full account, the nature of the learner.

Nature of the Code

• letters are pictures of sounds
• a sound picture can be one or more than one letter
• there is variation in the code
• there is overlap in the code
* These are CONCEPTS that a child must understand, experience and know how to manage to be able to read.

Skills for Using the Code

• segmenting
• blending
• phoneme manipulation
* These are the SKILLS a child has to be able to perform. These skills have been revealed by thirty years of research. Until recently they were thought of as one skill, 'phonological processing'. These are actually three distinct skills. Instructionally this means each needs to be taught explicitly.

The Code

the 143 or so sound pictures that represent the sounds of our language
* This is INFORMATION. Exposing the child to this information while he is cognizant of the above concepts and performing the above skills, will allow him to internalize the 'information' (the code)... to 'form it within'.

Teaching Reading and Spelling

The remainder of the course is intended to give the participant fourteen lessons for teaching reading and spelling. There will be a focus on whole class instruction including motivation, class management and remediation.

We will also discuss ideas for extensions of lessons into seatwork, small group work and homework.

Basic Code Reading and Spelling - 2 hours

Presentation of four lessons for teaching the concepts and skills of the basic code.

Lunch Break - 1 hour

Advanced Code Reading and Spelling- 2 hours, 30 minutes

Presentation of seven lessons for teaching the concepts and skills of the advanced code, with discussion
of integrating these lessons and concepts into good children's literature.

Tea and coffee break - 15 minutes

Multisyllable Reading and Spelling - 1 hour, 30 minutes

Presentation of three lessons for teaching children to read and spell multisyllable words.

Day Two - Focus on the Basic Code

Presentation of the manipulative lessons in the morning
Practicum in the afternoon

Day Three - Focus on the Advanced Code

Presentation of the manipulative lessons in the morning
Practicum in the afternoon

Day Four - Focus on Multisyllable

Presentation of the manipulative lessons in the morning
Practicum in the afternoon

Day Five - Diagnostics

Presentation of the Phono-Graphix tests
Discussion of standardized reading tests and error pattern analysis
Discussion of case management and flow of the course of instruction or remediation

Final Examination
