BACKGROUND For three seasons, NBC nationally aired Starting Over, a daytime, reality tv show. Six women, starting over in some aspect of their life (career, relationships) lived together and had the guidance of two life coaches. When the show was filming in Chicago, the producers of Starting Over contacted me and I had the opportunity to work with and get to know Hannah. The work we did during our lessons and the breakthroughs that Hannah encountered were aired, in part, during three episodes. ABOUT HANNAH Hannah is an intelligent, energetic, and compassionate woman in her mid-40s that entered the "Starting Over" house for support when she chose to make a career change from voice over artist to auctioneer.
While Hannah has faced having dyslexia her entire life, this learning disability came to the forefront while preparing for her new career. Hannah had many symptoms of adults with dyslexia as listed here on the
International Dyslexia Association's website.
Rather than simply supporting Hannah in her dream to become an auctioneer, the Life Coaches at Starting Over also chose to help Hannah address dyslexia and improve her abilities in reading.

It does not matter if you are 6 or 96, all individuals need the same information to become a good reader.
The skills needed are:
Blending - the ability to push sounds together to form a word Segmenting - the ability to separate whole words into their individual sounds, and Auditory Processing - the ability to manipulate sounds within a word
In addition, the reader needs to know how individual sounds are shown in our written language (Code Knowledge).

Initial Consultation and Assessment
|
The Phono-Graphix assessment was completed with Hannah in a one-on-one room. However, on a few occasions during the assessment, Hannah indicated that the humming of the camera interfered with her concentration and her ability to hear me saying the sounds. This information is important as it indicates her ability to focus along with the possibility that the sub-test results may not reflect her actual abilities.
