Our Goal...
The goal of CAL Reading Clinic is to provide an effective reading program to as many individuals as possible. The foundation of this program is the Phono-Graphix® method of reading.

To meet this goal, in addition to offering one-on-one reading therapy, CAL Reading Clinic also offers training to teachers and other interested individuals so that they may implement Phono-Graphix in their classrooms or private practices.

What is Phono-Graphix?
Phono-Graphix is a reading method developed by Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness of Read America, Inc. in Florida and reported in the Orton Annals of Dyslexia, 1996. Phono-Graphix is based upon rigorous research in the field of reading and clinical experience with children.

In the past twenty years, leading researchers have shown that the following issues are critical to learning to read:

• Auditory Processing, which is the ability to segment, blend, and manipulate individual sounds within words.

• Code Knowledge, which is the awareness and understanding of the sound to symbol code used in the written English language.

• Cognitive Strategy, which is what one does to try to read. Examples of poor strategies are: guess, use picture clues, and memorize whole words. The appropriate strategy is to sound words out based on the code.
